Today’s Dame of the Day is Sheila Lirio Marcelo. Born in the Philippines, Marcelo grew up in an entrepreneurial family with stakes in the coconut, mango, and coal industries. As an adult, she attended Harvard Business School and put her skills into practice. While she struggled to find caregivers for her children and ailing father, Marcelo founded Care.com to help connect people with vetted care professionals. Today, Care.com has over 9.7 million members.
Today’s Dame of the Day is Geena Rocero (1984-). Rocero grew up in the Philippines but immigrated to San Francisco with her family when she was 15. After a fashion photographer discovered her in New York City, she began booking international swimsuit shoots. In 2014, Rocero started Gender Proud, a non-profit advocating for transgender rights. In 2014, she and 13 other trans women posed for the fifth anniversary cover of C☆NDY Magazine.
Today’s Dame of the Day is Corazon Aquino (January 25, 1933 – August 1, 2009). Aquino served as president of the Philippines from 1986 to 1992, making her the country’s first woman president and the first woman president of any Asian country. Without any prior political experience, she weathered several coup attempts and managed to implement a new constitution supporting more civil liberties and human rights.
